Basically, whatever a person acts in deciding how to behave or making choices is certainly influenced by his or her personality. So, if you understand the big picture of the human personality, you would be able to characterize the personality type of a particular person. You then can make a conclusion what a person is thinking at this time. Well, some people out there might be skeptical about its accuracy without a research. But realistically, this study would be always a material for you to have your own personality psychology research.

By learning personality psychology you would be able to compare the current condition and personality of someone. Let’s get started with personality psychology leaning basics of how you can know someone’s personality.

What is Personality?

To learn personality psychology you can start with knowing the meaning of personality. In which, the meaning of personality is sometimes still ambiguous in the mind of common people. You will find out that there are some synonyms which are used to define personality. Though, their meaning is different from one to another. For example;

Character

The meaning of the character is different to personality. Though, Character is a description of behavior that we can assess its value whether good or poor.

Disposition

Briefly, the definition of Disposition is a subtle character of an individual person which has been held from a long time ago and isn’t changeable. For example; “The disposition of that child is anger”.

Traits

The definition of traits is a response that a person gives to an event or a circumstance that befall an individual person. The exact occurrence of the same response means it signifies someone’s nature. For example; “John Doe is an easily offended person”.

Type-Attribute

This one is quite similar to the Traits but in stimuli (events or circumstances that make someone responding) which further more limited, it isn’t within the broadest range of traits. For example; “Lilly is shy when dealing with a man.

Habit

The definition of Habit is an action that a person does repeatedly from the same stimulant. For example; “Rebecca is always late for 5 minutes when going to school.

Well then, what is personality? The following is the list of some personality definitions from psychology experts I have collected from various sources.

The Definitions of Personality

I have read some personality definitions from psychology experts which in the order are I describe roughly as you can see at the list below. Personality is;

  • The social stimulus value (SSV) of the ability of impressive self-displaying. (Hilgard & Marquis)
  • The entire life of a person, individual, unique, the efforts to achieve goals, the ability to survive and open up, the ability to gain experience. (Stern)
  • A dynamic organization in a psycho-physiologic system that determines its unique model of adjustment to its environment. (Allport)
  • The unique traits pattern of a person. (Guilford)
  • The entire characteristics of a person or a general nature of many people that result in a settled pattern in responding to a situation. (Previn)
  • A set of stable traits and trends, which determine the long-term gametes and differences in the psychological behavior (thinking, feeling, and movement) of a person and can not be understood simply as the result of social pressure and current biological pressure. (Mandy or Burt)
  • The organization that organizes organs, which from birth to death never cease to be involved in the conversion of functional activities. (Murray)
  • T typical patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that distinguish one person from another and they don’t change across time and situation. (Phares)

Well, comparing one to another personality definition from various sources might be a bit confusing. But basically, personality is the unique behaviors of a person. They are more without any influence. At least to learn personality psychology you know the general description personality meaning.

Types of Human Personality

Actually, you can find many theories about the types of human personality. If you are really enthusiastic about learning personality psychology, you can read psychology books.

However, we don’t really need to memorize all of them. Because basically, every scientist announces his or her theory based on own observation. Which means if you often observe a person, most likely your subconscious mind will be able to group personality types. Meanwhile, one thing most scientists do is only about naming.

Carl Jung with His 3 Types of Personality

Carl Jung is a well-known psychologist from Swiss. He then distinguishes human personality into introvert, extrovert and ambivert. You might be familiar with the 3 personality types mentioned by Carl Jung. The following is the big description of each.

  • The introvert is a personality that we often refer to as a person who is quiet, closed, less social skills and the like.
  • The extrovert is the opposite of introvert. It’s a person with high social skills, easy to mingle, and open.

Of course, both of them have their respective advantages. You can read the mind of an introvert if you invite him or her he to a crowded place for socializing. And the opposite, of course, you will know when an extrovert is getting bored with any activity that so-so alone. And many other examples.

  • Meanwhile, Ambivert is the mid-line between introvert and extrovert personality type. In which, an ambivert person can be an introvert and also quite shrewd to be an extrovert as well.

Hippocrates with His 4 Personality Theories

Hippocrates was a prominent philosopher from Greece. He argues that 4 types of personality such as sanguine, choleric, melancholy, and phlegmatic.

  • Sanguin is more like an extrovert. A friendly person, always passionate, loves to talk and looks prominently in a group although not a leader type, and his or her mind is often changing.
  • Koleris is more stubborn, optimistic, playful, and passionate, but emotionally charged.
  • Melancholy is more sensitive, but also an analyst, vindictive, and easy to see the negative side, like to mingle, and doesn’t like to be a cynosure. But most of the melancholy people are great businessmen.
  • Phlegmatic is a patient person, likes to find the fastest solution, orderly, has a more sarcastic sense of humor, easy to get along, doesn’t like new things, and prefer to choose to become the audience.

I think the four types of personality theories from Hippocrates are still seem ambiguous and rather difficult to differentiate from one to another. However, each of them still evinces its typical personality.

16 Personality Types

The 16 personality types we are going to discover here were revealed by Isabel Briggs Myers. She developed a psycho-test for 16 personality types. The test is called MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). This psychological test works by looking at how humans determine their decisions and how they perceive the world.

the psycho-test was designed in 1940 and functionalized to measure intelligence, talent, and personality type of a person. In which we our goal of learning this is essentially to find out the 16 personality types according to Briggs Myers.

Because 16 personality types are too many, it would be nice if you only learn the core of them first. This is certainly good for you who want to learn personality psychology. So, it isn’t the only textbook but also to practice the subconscious understanding.

The 16 personality types are the combinations from 4 dimensions. In which, each dimension has two possibilities such as;

Concentration

In this dimension, there are two possibilities between Introvert (I) or Extrovert (E).

Understanding the Information

The understanding the information from the outside of human beings have two attributes, namely to understand with the information received and to understand with the mind like a sensor on a robot. Sensing (S). Or it puts forward the feeling or intuition (N).

Concluding and Deciding

In making a decision or concluding something, someone can more often use the mind. Thinking (T). Or more often make decisions based on Feeling (F).

Lifestyle

The lifestyle of human habits can be organized and planned. Judging (J). Or more open and accept the possibilities that will happen. Perceiving (P).

Well, you can combine every possible occurrence from the four dimensions. I prefer to observe rather than give a written test to determine one’s personality type.
